BITS & BITES: Al fresco dining at the doorstep

Memorial Day weekend is one of the first times of the year when it’s warm enough (most of the time) in northeast Wisconsin to enjoy an outdoor meal. We’ve listed a few spots here to help you make the most of the start of outdoor dining season, whether you’re looking for a patio meal or a swoon-worthy picnic basket.

The Ginger House

9114 Highway 42 to Fish Creek

Opened just in time for the start of the outdoor dining season, The Ginger House offers an assortment of themed picnic baskets and accessories to take home. Whether you’re exploring the door with your sweetheart, catching up with your best friends, or looking for an unusual way to greet guests, this picnic and wine shop can whip up a basket that’s out of the ordinary.


7821 Horseshoe Bay Road in Egg Harbor

Mezzanine, formerly the Harbor View Grill, opened on May 21. The newly renovated dining room offers beautiful rooftop views to accompany your breakfast, lunch or dinner. From maple-cherry pancakes with Nueske bacon and smoky whitefish bagel to Reuben’s house-smoked pastrami and three-cheese Wisconsin macaroni, the menu is decidedly Door County with a zesty twist.

Upper Deck at Gordon Lodge

1420 Pine Drive at Baileys Harbor

Now open for the season, Gordon Lodge’s Top Deck combines a casual dining atmosphere with views that are dressed to impress. Take in a spectacular sunset while enjoying handcrafted cocktails and appetizers, or celebrate a special occasion atop what was once a charming boathouse. The bar opens at 3 p.m.; dinner service begins at 4 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.

Door County Cherry Shack

8813 Hwy 42 to Fish Creek

Food and fun go hand-in-hand at Door County Cherry Hut, where you can grab a specialty hot dog or taco — or opt for a special from one of the season-long pop-up vendors — before you head out. head out to the patio to enjoy the live tunes. When the Door County evenings get a little chilly, the fire pit provides the perfect place to relax with an adult drink from the dining room. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wickman House

Book a table to dine under the maples in Wickman House’s outdoor seating area. Although reservations cannot be moved indoors when the restaurant is full in the event of inclement weather, the magical ambiance that accompanies a meal enjoyed in the outdoor dining space is worth the risk.
