How to make a dog-friendly Ocado pancake – get the recipe

If you’re thinking of involving your dog in pancake day, you might not realize that traditional recipes might upset his stomach.

A dog is seen by many as just another member of the family, but it’s important to remember that they need a different diet than humans and that some ingredients in pancakes can cause stomach issues or even health issues like diabetes.

Not wanting puppies to miss out, Ocado teamed up with a pet nutrition expert to create a recipe that’s safe for dogs, even those with particularly sensitive tummies.

Stephen Ward is the founder of Heights Farm Premium Pet Foods, an independent manufacturer of high quality pet foods designed for pets with allergies and intolerances. Stephen is passionate about pet nutrition.

He said: ‘Traditional human pancakes filled with syrup would not be suitable for dogs as they contain salts, sugars and carbohydrates.

“A dog cannot break down fats and carbohydrates like a human does. If eaten regularly, the result would usually be rapid weight gain which, of course, can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes.

“Also, more immediate problems can be seen in dogs with allergies, intolerances and particularly sensitive stomachs.”

When is pancake day 2022

This year, Pancake Day falls on March 1. Otherwise known as Mardi Gras, it is the day before the start of the Lenten fast practiced by Christians in the run-up to the Easter festival.

Pancakes are supposed to consume things like eggs, milk, and sugar before the fast begins.

Pancake recipe suitable for dogs

Stephen has crafted a recipe especially for dogs to enjoy this pancake day, replacing common allergens like wheat flour and cow’s milk with dog-friendly alternatives.

The recipe can be found on the Ocado website, where you can also purchase the necessary ingredients.
