West Oakland’s popular June’s Pizza has closed.

The small pizzeria, known for making pies with a dust-covered cheese crust, made the announcement on Wednesday. Instagram.

In the post, chef-owner Craig Murli wrote that his business “couldn’t get the permits needed to continue to grow in the space we were in.” He added: “When I think of the tremendous support we have received from our clients and our team over the past year and a half, I am moved.”

But that might not be the end of June’s Pizza. Murli hinted that the restaurant could return, albeit to a different location, simply ending the post with “We will be back”. He hasn’t developed any further details yet.

June’s Pizza became a booming pizzeria in West Oakland last March as Bay Area County closures took effect. Nonetheless, he was known to throw around 40 pies a day and sell out within minutes. June’s Pizza made wood-fired pies with seasonal toppings sourced from local farms, complemented with a generous sprinkling of Parmesan around the crust.

June Pizza was at 2311 Magnolia St. in West Oakland.
